Oil Pan...what is that thing just to the passenger's side of the drain plug?

On my turbo volvos there is rectangle thing bolted to the oil pan just to the passenger's side of the oil drain plug on the oil pan. It is about 4x5' and about an inch thick. What is it? A cooler? I have no idea...don't think my non-turbos had it. Does it need any service?

    Engine oil heat exchanger (oil cooler).

        No regular service is required. You only replace it if it leaks, etc.
