oil pan protection 850 1997

The wife ran over an object from a dump truck and punched a hole in the drain pan. 700 bucks later i'm back on the road. Looking for protection to avoid this again,although unlikely. Would the stock air dam offer any protection,which was not on the car when purchased, or is the IPD skid plate the way to go? Is the air dam a high priority item? 1997 850GLT

Would appreceiate any comments from this great site. Thanks,
