Smelly exhaust 850 1997

My car has exhaust fumes that I think smell odd. My mechanic says that it's normal for a car with the amount of miles mine has (125,000) to smell that way and attributes it to an aging catalytic converter. A few times I've noticed it having a strong sulfur smell and don't know if higher octane gas would help or if I'm looking at something there's no cure for. Any ideas???
