synthetic oil S70 2000

I have a 00 S70 turbo and I have been useing mobil 1 5w30 synthetic since I bought the car with 35 k miles on it. The car now has 76k miles on it. I talked
to mmy local indi mechanic about setting up my 80 k mile service and mentioned that I use synthetic and he said he didn't recomend it. He said that I may be wasteing my money on the synthetic. What do you guys think. I intend on keeping the car for a while and I tend to be heavy footed!
