Rear Callipers on 2.0 440 GLT

I'm having difficulty retracting the piston in the rear callipers of my 440 GLT (1995 model). The rear disc set up on this model has the handbrake operating through the calliper via a mechanical linkage and has a screw adjuster to retarct the piston when new pads are being fitted. Can this mechanism be fixed on the workbench if the screw does not seem to be retracting the piston, or is it time for a new calliper? Any advice appreciated!
