Tranny gone 850

Well not a good day for us we found out today our 93 850 transmission is going south. It has started to slip we noticed it getting worse and were told today it is going out. What a bummer. Haven't decided yet what we are going to do probably junk it. It has 114,000 on it and will probably be about $1500.00 to get another tranny installed. A shame because the car is otherwise in good condition. Just wanted to hear your opinions and what you would do? If I do look for a newer model any tips, I like the S60's and have my eye on a 2002. Are these OK in your opinion? Thanks to all for your replies. As always they are appreciated.
