Here's a interesting problem.....I just purchased a 2003 S60 AWD Turbo with 30k on it. It runs great, but there is one issue which I believe to be an interrmittent electrical system problem. Sometimes when I'm driving, (low or high speed, in town or steady-state highway, cold or hot, straight or curvy) the car develops an electrical system problem. It happens about once a week of normal driving. Here are the symptoms:
ABS warning light comes on
Brake Failure Light comes on
Speedometer drops to zero
Tachometer drops to zero
Temperature Guage drops to zero
All these lights and guages stay in their erroneous state until the car is restarted. All guage illumination stays on, and there is no evidence of electrical system failure elsewhere in the vehicle. The brakes act perfect, and there is no ABS activation. Upon restart of the vehicle, the ABS passes its startup diagnostic and all these lights/guages work fine.
I used a Innova 3100 OBDII code reader (purchased from IPD), and it said it has a code of U-0073. Most codes are P codes, and I'm assuming that this is a manufacturer specific code? However, the manual says "U" codes are a "network failure".....So I have no idea what a U-0073 code means on this car. I cannot confirm yet if this code was simply sitting in the computer from a long time ago waiting to be read, or if it is generated when the above mentioned problem occurs. I hope to confirm this after erasing the code and driving it until the problem happens again.
Luckily, it still has another 20k on the warranty, so I could take it into the dealer, but I wanted to throw out this question to you guys first and see if anyone has had any experience with this. I have good relationship with my mechanic, and he would take my advice if someone else knew what he should focus his attention on.
Thanks guys,
Jason
