I have a '97 850 with 114,000 miles in excellent shape. EXCEPT, intermittantly the transmission arrow blinks, the check engine light comes on and I have only 2nd and 3rd gear. It only happens after car is driven for some time and everything gets hot. After cooling off the light still blinks, the check engine light stays on but everything shifts 1 through 4 just fine. I can disconnect the battery and the blinking arrow resets but not the check engine light. The local Volvo dealer put it on his diagnostic computer and got a code saying the shift solenoid showed a historical fault. His remedy is a $3000 transmission because "We don't repair 'em, we just change 'em." Sounds like a crock to me. I have researched and seem there are two solenoids S1 and S2 that are the culprits. Problem is I don't know their location or how to get to them. Any help would be appreciated.
