In market for S40 S40-V40

I'm helping my girlfriend shop for a Volvo S40. Somebody ran into her Escort ZX2, and after 165K it's not worth sinking the $1200 to fix the car. She's a union member that works for Ford Mo Co, so it's important that she show herself at work with a Ford product. She likes the looks of the Volvo, and she doesn't want a gas hog. Can she really expect 30 mpg with this car? She's looking to spend around $10K for one with around 50K miles.

What quirks should she know about this model? What keywords should I use to search for such issues on this board?
