Off road capability with AWD?

I do alot of hiking in remote places in Maine. I end up going on some pretty crappy logging roads, through streams etc. I usually end up renting a truck but this is in practical long term. The XC seems like it can handle a reasonable amount without having to get a range rover or something. The reality is we spend most time on paved roads. Anyone have experience going on crappy roads, traversing streams with their XC????

P.s. I currenlty have a T5 Wagon which I would trade in.
