Transmission dipstick stuck V70-XC70 1999

I started hearing noises this week from my 1999 v70 (110K mi). Thought it may be coming from the transmission but when I went to check the fluid level - which I haven't checked on ths vehicle before -
I couldn't pull out the dipstick. A plastic yellow rhandle under an air tube.
I pulled fairly hard and it won't move at all- it is only plastic so I didn't want to use a bar to provide leverage for fear of breaking it. The handle does rotate - but won't move up.

Is there a trick to removing it? A switch? or Just use more force?
