Rotted Receiver Dryer for A/C - 1998 S70

Hello all,

Our car was diagnosed with a leaking evap back in August 2003. I have lived with it by putting about two to three 14oz cans of 134a refrigerant a year and everything has been cool and no problem.

We had an oil change done last April and the dealer tech says that the receiver dryer for A/C is rotted and leaking. We had started using the A/C prior to the oil change and the A/C seemed to be working fine. Coincidentally, the A/C was blowing warm air after we had the oil change done. Hmmm. Anyway, I put a can of refrigerant and the A/C seemed to work fine in April & May until today (1.5 months later). I put another can of refrigerant but it didn't seem to help. The gauge stayed steadily at about 57 psi. It used to flip back and forth between 25 and 45 psi.

The quote is $500 to install a new receiver dryer (this includes vacating the system, putting black dye, etc). Is the price about right or a little too high? I am hoping I can still live with the evap for a couple more years.

P.S. I am providing all this information because I do not know much about A/C systems.

Thanks in advance.
