Hi all, I am in search of your collective opinions on whether a car I am toying with purchasing is a good value. In sum, it is a very clean 2000 XC, a relatively clean history, except that it was bought back by Volvo under the California lemon law in 2002 with 52K miles on it. Since then, it was transported to Connecticut and sold there by a dealer to the 2nd owner. The car now has 90K on it. I tracked down the owner, it appears the car was used by his wife and that they had no kids. He said he had eletrical problems (had to have the computer reset, which may be related to a TCM Memory loss problem that shows up on the carfax sheet under the first owner, just before Volvo took it back as a lemon. He said he had to repair an oil leak. The car is immaculate inside and out and underneath. Here is a list of what I found wrong after borrowing it overnight:
1.Rear defrost wires damaged, only one operates
2. Mirrors inoperable
3. Rear passenger door windows do not work (both sides not functioning), whether from the master drivers control panel or the individual buttons on the rear doors.
4. Pulls to right and steering wheel misaligned. Needs wheel alignment.
5. Drivers seat makes noise when moving forward and back. May just require greasing of track.
6. Antifreeze leak somewhere so that you can smell it coming thru heating/a.c. duct system. Could be leak under hood or leak in heater core.
7. Rattle/noise in front right strut area, not sure what it is, could be a ball joint or stabilizer bar bushing beginning to go. More noticeable when making sharp turn to left.
Engine runs well and is quiet, transmission shifts well and is responsive, handles great. All else if fine.
So, I can get the car for $8700 with a new master window switch included, but I will be on the hook for the other repairs, including the heater core weep (no puddling on floor as of yet). Is this a fair price or even a good deal? Should I even consider this car given its lemon history? I am interested in your feedback. Thanks.
