Brake pedal position sensor - what does it do?

During a recent dealer visit, they reported a code from the brake position sensor. I couldn't see any point in having them replace it, since I am not having a problem with the brakes or brake lights.

Anyone know what this sensor does? I suspect that it may be the cuase of the cruise control switch off every once in a while, but I use the cruise control so rarely, I don't actually care. Does this sensor have any other function?
