ABS light just came on S70

My abs light came on last week, but shut off after a few miles, then it came on again and shut off, not it is on again.

Any ideas on what could be wrong?
Would it be very costly?
Is it necessary to have ABS?
Is there a different diagnosis if it comes on and off rather than staying on?
