Making a clicking sound in the 30 - 40 mph range V70-XC70 2000

And it is loud! My V70 XC AWD SE has 129000 on it. The bevel gear has been replaced. Recently it has started to make a noise that is very similar to the sound of putting a stick in the spokes of a bicycle wheel. It does not happen all of the time. The car has to be driven 15 minutes or so. Then when cruising between 30 - 40 mph, the clicking starts. If you slowly apply the brakes, the clicking slows as well. Stomp on the brakes or accelerator and the sound usually goes away. It is loud enough that people are looking over to see what the heck it is that is making the noise. By the way, it doesn't matter if the A/C is on or off. Of course when I took it to my mechanic it would not make the noise. Any ideas???
