air pump noisy for 5 min + V70-XC70 1998

volvo v70 awd 1998 has a noisy airpump. It lasts for more than 5 minutes usually, and comes on and off intermittently, even after the car is warmed-up. I don't get a check engine light, so I don't think I have to change the air pump.
I recently messed with the intake valve when I had to undo the air filter, but that's a pretty simple thing so I don't see how that could have messed up the air pump.
Ideas?
