My 2000 V70 XC has a starting issue. It has been happening for the last few days. Here's what happens. I get in the car, and go to turn the key. It cranks and cranks and cranks...but does not run. So, in desperation on the first morning it occurred, I disconnected the battery for bout 5 min. Then I reconnected it, put the key in, and it started as normal. It ran a little rough for the first few seconds, but then stabilized, and as fine on the drive to work (approx 30 min). Then a few days later, the same thing occured here at work...I pulled the +cable, waited, reconnected it, and it started...fine for the drive home. I even had a few stops to do and it started right up everytime, with one long crank on my last stop, which brings me to the next issue: over the past month or so, the car has needed more than the regular amount of cranking to start. Sometimes it crnaks 4 times (normal) sometimes it cranks 10-12 times and eventually starts. Sometimes it starts roughly, but stabilizes. No loss of normal driveability has been experienced when it is running, iddilng and driving, though...
When the car does start after cranking for a while, I hear this semi-high pitched howling...could that be the fuel pump? The pump makes a loud hiss when the car is just iddling, but thats normal ...right?
Side note: the car has been throwing a P0422 code for about 6 months now. I have been replacing vaccuum lines one by one with silicone items, and have a rear O2 sensor coming for it to see if that will resolve the code...I just keep resetting it with my Scantron to see if ti reappears when i replace a line.
Above all, I love this car, and it has been really really good to me. I have no complaints except for a starter that went poop at 70,000 miles (it curently has 73,000). Battery was replaced in early July.
thanks in advance for your help, and excuse my rambling...I'm worried for my wagon :(
