SC816 radio repar CD inperative

I have dissassembled and reassembled my SC816 radio.
The CD player had been inoperative, and remains so.
I have a 2nd radio which I have been swapping parts between the two.
Meanwhile either CD player fails to operate now.
I am wondering if there is some hidden interlock or something due to the cd player laser warning?
I have pressed the 'reset button' which I think is more of a position sense switch on the carriage assembly than a reset as some people call it.
Basically the disc will not be pulled in or ejected, or spin if it is forced completely in.
If a disc is forced in, the LCD will display track one etc and various messages, not errors.
Any suggestions?
