white smoke and licking noise from the engine. 850

i have 95 850 turbo wagon. the problem is when car runs for while on highway,then runs on the surface street, after stopping for more than a minutes for a red light and start driving, the white smoke comes out from the exhuase for a second. it won't happend for a while. it seems like it happends more after i put on P in AT lever. but, it will happends even it is on the D shift.
also, lately i notice that there is licking noise (like something hitting on the alminun) from the engine (cover for spark plug area).
i don't know if they are related.
please let me know what you guys think.
