Upper-Rear Firewall-Mounted Torque Mount V70-XC70 1998

I recently discovered mine was loose. Not surprising since it's never been replaced. I heard someone mention that when you replace the rubber donut on the other end of the torque rod with urethane. It causes the firewall unit to wear faster, since it's rubber, not urethane.

An easy way to test for this is to have someone start the car, put on the brakes, and switch between reverse & drive, on an automatic, a few times while you watch the mount for movement. You don't need any gas.

I got the part from the local dealer for around $34 and had it in within 30 minutes. It's an easy job. Sure enough, the rubber on the original one was cracked on both sides. Use Locktite on the studs when reassembling.

Before removing the wiper arms, I scribed a line with an awl on the end of the mounting stud and a corresponding mark on the black arm where the stud fits through. See WARNING below.

To make the wiper arms easier to get off, lift up on the end with the blades and then push down where the arm 'breaks' or 'bends' to take the spring tension off the mounting stud. Then it'll slide right off. Vice-versa upon re-installation.

WARNING: If you should mount your wiper arms too low, down near the lower edge of the windshield, when you're putting it back together, the back edge of the hood will hit the wiper arm, possibly bending it, when you close the hood. (No, this didn't happen to me). CLOSE THE HOOD SLOWLY to be sure you have sufficient clearance, particularly on the drivers side.

It's nice when something takes less time than you think, the dealer DID sell you the right part, and the skin is still on your knuckles!
