850R Volans wheels question--durability? 850

Hi--I'm probably buying a 1997 850R this week. It's in GREAT shape, red, with 17 in Volans wheels. I've been reading a lot about the Volans wheels on the forums, and am wondering how fragile they really are. Seems like there is a constant thread of warnings about these wheels bending. How serious is this concern? I would prefer to keep the Volans on the car.
I guess I'll find out soon enough, but some more info on this topic would be a big help as I ponder what the car may need to be safe and sound in the future.
