Just as I am selling my 850, the battery dies. It wouldn't even hold a charge after a jump start. So I bought a totally new battery and I am amazed at the hidden benefits of disconnecting the power for a few seconds.
It makes sense though...as the battery dies slowly, high load operations like ignition and ac start to get quirky. Starts get rougher, ac comes in and out..soon things like idle control and fuel flow get rough and this sets off all kinds of codes in the computer. These problems are often mistaken for malfuctions in the systems themselves rather than being traced back to electrical issues. In modern cars the computers get bunged up with old codes and will sometimes still show the error even after the problem is fixed. Sometimes just running for years without a reboot generates errors.
Well, I replaced the battery and EVERYTHING is better. Firstly, the check engine code was cleared, the annoying scam called the "Service" light was cleared and there is clear improvement in idle control and fuel flow. I suggest that everyone try a computer reset this way!
JUST MAKE SURE YOU KNOW YOUR STEREO LOCKOUT CODE! Luckily I had mine in a safe place!
