As a present to myself, I finally secured the heatshield surrounding the cat converter. For 45,000 I put up with the occasional rattle and decided to fix it today.
There are 4 anchoring 10mm bolts (plastic) with flanges on the bottom of the bolt to hold on the shield. The shield had worn enough to have 1 inch holes at each bolt area, allowing the shield to just kind of hang in there.
I purchased 4 1/4inch washers at the hardware store which are close to 2 inches wide. The 10mm plastic bolts have very little torque and came off easily. Use a wrench, not a ratchet. Then the new washer was installed with the plastic bolt finger tight. I then took a small hammer and tapped the large washer so that it rested firmly against the body. Then I lightly torqued the plastic bolt back down. Do not use oil or WD40 on the stud hanging down from the body, the rust helps keep the plastic nut in place.
No more rattles!
For those with AWD: Fix yours now, my heatshield managed to rub against the driveshaft and created a shiney area. I can only hope no damage was done through my lazyness.
