Hello All,
I have a 1999 XC. I purchased it used with just under 12,000 miles. Today, 10 years later (it was manufactured in August of 1998) the car has 87,000 miles on it. According to the owners manual, the timing belt (and tensioner I believe) should be replaced at 105,000. This is not a cheap service, but nor is the cost if the belt breaks due to age and the valves get eaten.
My concern is that maybe I should replace the belt now instead of at 105,000 for fear the belt may be ready to go, not due to wear, but age. On the other hand, if this is a needless worry, and I can safely sit back and change the belt at the recommended mileage interval, that's what I'll do. The owner's manual doesn't state a time alternative (i.e. 105,000 or 7 years which ever comes first) for changing the belt. Just strictly miles. Of course, the manual on my 850s say change the oil and filter every 10,000 miles or at 5,000 if the vehicle is used under "heavy duty" conditions. I always change the oil at 5,000 miles, but of course the difference and complexity in this service is significant. I don't want to "over maintain" the car.
Also, is changing the t-belt and tensioner hard to do? Where can I get instructions (with lots of pictures please!) to show me how? Also, if I have private garage do it, what should I expect to spend, using only OEM parts.
I'd be interested in hearing the thoughts of others. Thanks for replies in advance.
