Can I put tires from 95 850 on 04 XC

Hi All,
Am wondering if we can put tires from my wife`s retired 850 on the XC. She bought brand new 205/55/16 Michelins which are now sitting in the garage just before buying the XC last Spring.
I haven`t been all that impressed with the Pirelli Scorpions that were on the car when she bought it even tho` they were brand new.
Also have a set of Nokian winters that have very low mileage on them but the Volvo manual states that 17`s must be installed on an XC.
Any advice?
