XC 70 Or ?? V70-XC70

We need to replace the 240 wagon and are looking at some replacements. My best option was the XC but after reading Consumer Reports and Lemon Aid I don't know if I can afford to purchase one. Its not the initial cost it is the record of service that these vehicles need according to these books. It seems as if anything older than '04 you should avoid like the plague, and anything newer is a unknown. Where do I go, Toyota Tacoma and buy a canopy or Subaru or should take a chance on a newer XC. Any opinions.
