Replacing valve cover liquid gasket V70-XC70 1998

Has anyone had experience with replacing the liquid gasket for the valve cover on a late model Volvo? I recently had a mechanic try to use the liquid pink stuff that came from the Volvo dealer. It would not cure and they made a mess since it did not seal the cover. So they went back and used Black RTV gasket sealer. When I took it back to my regular Volvo mechanic, he was surprised and had never seen a Volvo valve cover with Black RTV. He has me concerned if this was a bad decision to use Black RTV. Does anyone know of any reasons not to use Black RTV for late model Volvo valve covers?
