Creak - creak - creak - creak -creak... as the steering wheel turns! V70-XC70 1999

my '99 XC just started an intermittent sound as I turn the steering wheel. Other than the "front" of the vehicle, I can't quite make out where the sound is coming from. As I weave slowly through a parking lot (empty, of course!)... left to right... I am hearing a "creak - creak - creak - creak - creak - creak" as I am turning the steering wheel. The noise starts as soon as the steering wheel begins to turn in either direction.

Any thoughts or suggestions as what to look for are appreciated. Thanks!!
