Susan showed up today in her 1996 nonturbo 850 with a problem of losing coolant and some boiling.
A quick look over the situation showed no milkiness in the oil, apparently no coolant in the exhaust,
but coolant coming out of the reservoir after driving.
After it had cooled off the level was down some so we filled the reservoir to the seam around the middle,
which seems to serve as the "MAX" line on this model.
I tried squeezing the upper radiator hose and got a little air out, but very little.
Closer examination revealed a crack about a third of the way around the threaded fill neck of
the reservoir. Not sure how that happened but we're wondering if that by itself could be the
cause of the coolant loss and subsequent overheating.
I noticed that it had the turquoise 150 kPA pressure cap. I had a black 75 kPA cap in the garage which
fit OK and seemed to be a sensible alternative for the moment. Based on earlier experience with leaky pressure systems I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to keep the pressure cap loose till we get the reservoir replaced.
Also wonder if this is a common experience - I'm used to oldtimer pushrod engines and don't know much
about these newfangled DOHC engines!
