Upsizing Rim & Tires on 98' R Wagon V70-XC70 98

Just wondering if anyone has had any experience upgrading their R tire size from 16 inch to 17 or greater.

I would like to upgrade but the shop foreman at M&S in Toronto doesn't think it's a good idea. Any thoughts????
