Tips for a new buyer? S40-V40

Hello,

I am planning on leasing a car by the end of this month. I am debating between Volvo S40 and Volkswagen Passat. I found out that there's some kind of promotion going on with Volvo right now - $309/mo for 39-month-lease. Is this a good deal? Is there anything else that i should know about in terms of price negotiation, insurance. If I get any kind of information, it will be a great help.
