So we're looking at getting a 98 V70 and are hoping to find a GLT in our price range. We don't want AWD because we've heard there can be some reliability issues (and we just don't need it anyway). But I have come across an oddity. When I have run the VIN of all 3 of the GLTs I've found so far they've come up as 1998 V70 AWD in Carfax. Is this wrong or is the GLT AWD? Was it possible to get an AWD GLT? Edmunds says the GLT was FWD only.
I have heard of issues like this with carfax before, but want to know the real story. Is there a difinitive guide or FAQ anywhere online that lists the differences for each of the various varieties and/or model years?
Alternatively, does anyone know of a VIN decoder site (either one that does it for you or one that lists what the various codes mean) for Volvos (or know the various codes themselves)?
Thanks!
Also a warning to anyone looked at used V70s in the Bay area-there's an ad in the SF Chronicle for a 98 V70 for $12900. The car has a missouri salvage title and the guy won't tell you that- he said the car had been in a 'fender bender' that had been fixed. Its red with black cloth interior and 3rd seat. He saw us writing down the VIN and STILL didn't mention it. Also didn't mention it when I asked why it didn't have plates-he just said he bought it in Missouri and the registration had expired. Used car buying is so scary sometimes...
