As per our discussion on this thread: http://www.brickboard.com/AWD/index.htm?id=1310953&show_all=1
KlausC suggested that the rear axle is actually the same as the one used in the S/V90, so I figured the fluid spec should be listed in the manual for that model.
I finally got around to digging up the user's manual for the S/V90 and looking up what fluid actually goes into the rear differential. The document is here:
https://www.customers.volvocars.com/owners/docs/1998/1998_SV90/98S90_121.htm#ch9
That document clearly recommends:
Rear axle oil Quality: API-GL-5 (MIL-L-2105 C or D) SAE 80W-90 Capacity:1.4 US qts (1.3 liters) sedans/wagons
The issue of bevel gear oil was also previously discussed: http://www.brickboard.com/AWD/volvo/1311206/V70/awd_bevel_gear_oil.html
and nearly the same oil was supplied by a dealer in a Volvo container for that aplication: 80W-90 GL-5
