Looking at a 99 V70 V70-XC70 1999

Evening,
I've run across a '99 V70 GLT with 155k miles, for the paltry sum of $675.
As expected, it needs some work, like an exhaust, and he's not sure what else. Supposedly it runs and drives. Looks like it needs a grill, and maybe a hood, it's a little buckled. I'm not afraid of needy cars, I don't mind working on them.
I've always been a RWD guy, but I'd like to upgrade if the price is right. (it is) Are there any problem areas to look out for with a '99? Does it have to go to the dealer for a CEL, or can I use my OBDII scanner? I expect this will be the deal breaker if it has to go to the dealer every time the CEL comes on.

Regards,
Chris
