Some notes on dash repair for S/V/C 70. S70

Hi all,

I finally have the dash repaired and reinstalled.

A few things to share:

1. There are six (6), not four (4) screws holding the lower dash panel bottom--1 on each end, 1 on either side of the shifter and 2 in the middle panel, L & R of the opening for the center console locating tab.

2. I repaired the broken holders for the anchor bolts with PlastiFix which does not require additional reinforcement as it fuses with the existing ABS+PC that the panel is molded from.

3. I snugged the anchor bolts to 5-6 foot pounds with a 1/4" drive torque wrench.

4. I also stuck 4 pieces of 1/32" rubber foam ("Fun Foam", $1.00USD per sheet at Hobby Lobby) on the horIzontal surface of the firewall where the bolt holders rest prior to setting down the dash. Be sure not to cover the holes where the locating pegs go.

I'm guessing that as the felt insulation compresses over time and the bolt holders contact the bare metal, road concussion leads to cracking of the anchors retainers.

If the factory had spent a few cents on each car to provide a secondary source of shock absorption for those bolts holders, I bet this problem would have been avoided.

Anyway, it was a lot of work as so many fastener locators and receivers and panel sections were broken after years of dash movement when the main anchors failed.

But, the car is now so quiet!

Bryan
