I have an 1997 850 GLT with 43,000 miles on it.
The check engine light came on recently and remains on.
In addition, I recently heard a "clunking" noise from the engine compartment when going over small road bumps.
Not being a mechanic, I opened the hood and peered around (not knowing what I was looking for or what I would do if/when I "found something").
To my surprise, I found the entire radiator assembly is hanging loose, being supported only by the lower hoses against the car's undercarriage. I can easily pull up on the radiator and move it up 2 - 3 inches where two plastic "holders" seem to be placed to engage two plastic "prongs" on the top of the radiator assembly (so I know it is hanging quite low).
Underneath the car, there is nothing underneath the radiator assembly, but there appears to be a small piece of a metal bracket on the lower left front which looks freshly broken.
In addition, the underside of the front spoiler seems to be freshly scraped along its entire width.
I frequently use valet parking (one of the many horror's of living in south Florida) and wonder if some car parker "curbed" the front of the car severely enough to break off what I envision would be a radiator width metal bracket or support.
I have a service appointment tomorrow at our local dealership (describing the problem in detail to them they said "take it slow and it should make the 10 mile trip just fine...", but welcome any and all input about this situation in advance of hearing from them.
Thank you, in advance,
Duane
