rattle from rear - handbrake? 850 1995

I have got an infuriating rattle from the back of my 855

It seems to be worse on the near side - I thought it was the rear pad pins so I changed – it wasn’t
On inspection nothing is loose – though I noticed there’s a shield above rear silencer which is loose in one corner - and I don’t think these would make the ‘right noise’ but I wedged tight with a piece of wood (I did try to fasten properly first but it seems exhaust off is easiest way!). The noise still seemed to be there – from what I could hear through the noise of the exhaust reverberating through the chassis sounding like it had mega hole in it!
I’ve had a brief look at rear shocks but these appear secure and I did change top mounts within last couple of years along with the dampers – and I don’t think these would make the ‘right noise’

My money is on the internal handbrake assembly – I inspected last year – but when having a general look at the shoes – which were worn then and no doubt worse now as I didn’t change – they look like the originals – I’ve certainly never changed in 9 years….so anything in there which rattle in anyone’s experience?

I’d appreciate advice before stripping it all down and replacing handbrake shoes etc to find out the rattle is still there!
as it happens my handbrake is s**t - just good enough to pass our yearly test/MoT - but then that's what PARK is for!!

When i last looked one of the linings had become unbonded from the shoe - and as i needed the car and couldnt get a set, i stuck it back together with some epoxy resin and then proceeded to forget about it!!
