Won't come out of park w/out shft lock overide 850 1994

It's happened gradually over the last 6 months but now it's full time. I can't get my car out of park without depressing the shift lock overide button on the center console. I'm, of course, depressing the brake when shifting into gear. And yes, the car is on.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. I'd hate to take it to the dealer and find out that it's just some plug and play sensor only after I pay the $70 diagnostic fee.
