Damn!!! Drove with the gas cap off. need info

Damn! I tried to fill up gas earlier this evening but the gas station didn't accept my card so I went to another one. It was about a mile away. When I got to the other station, I realized that my gas tank was open all the time. I was like $hit! Did I do anything bad to the car? I'm a little surprised that the check engine light didn't go on. Actually, is it suppose to in the first place? I hope anyone out there has info on what I might have done to the car cuz it's freaking me out right now. I can't afford a major repair bill. Sorry for the rant. TIA.
