[V70XC} Check Engine Light-now what? V70-XC70 1998

1998 V70XC

The check engine light came on last week and has been on since then. I've checked the fuel cap and door, driven it to nearly empty before refilling it with gas and checked all the fluids. No foul odors or leaks, etc. What else, short of going to the dealer, can I do?

Note: the light came on after a cold rain when the car was sitting in a parking lot.
