AC Compresor shut 850

My AC comressor was shut last year on my 97 850 T5 smokked and caused the belt to go. replaced it with one from a 98 s70 and ayear later it happened again.
are these compresors known for this or just bad luck.also is there a shorter
belt to eliminate the compressor temporary till i get some time to replace it
again?
