engine service light 850 97

My service light is on and I called the dealer,They said I need to take it in and have there computer hooked up to take it out. I read in the operators manual and it said it is set to go on every 10,000 miles. I do all my own servicing. Can anyone help me with this or do I need to take it in. I can't believe they would put something like this in the system.
