excessive oil consumption 850 1994

i have a 94 850 with 96k miles. until about 6k miles ago, it never consumed oil. in the last few months, i have to add a quart every 300-400 miles. i don't think its burning oil and there is a heavy oily film on the tail light above the exhaust pipe. any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
