Snow Chains/Cables or Spikes Spider V70-XC70 1999

Anyone know about using snow chains (cables) on the 1999 XC's? I have the original tires 205/65 R15 and manual says do not use chains as it may interfere with brakes/housing etc. Volvo service says there isn't enough clearance for snow chains/cables and recommends using Spikes Spider - but they are very pricey. Anyone know of other alternatives or are the spikes spider the only option.
