CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AFTER WHIRLY FAN LIKE SOUND??? S70

Have a 1998 S70. Car was running fine. This morning after driving for app. 5 miles, I heard a winding noise, sounding like a faint heater motor fan bearing problem. It was not the heater motor, and stopped shortly afterwards upon continued driving. Then within a few seconds the Check Engine light lit up. According to my manual that is related to an emissions system problem. Any way to check this out myself? or determine what the whirly sound was coming from?
The car ran fine to and from work, which is about 17 miles each way. The Check Engine light is still lit. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
