94 turbo wagon with 97 engine: leads to problems with speedometer? 850

I was speaking with a Volvo mechanic today. He has a 94 850 turbo wagon for sale with a '97 engine. He says that the speedo pickup is different, and that's why the speedo/odo doesn't work. He does think he has a way to make it work.

Just wondered if this is a common problem between the years? The car might have some promise--cosmetics aren't great, but it runs and drives well, and he replaced the PCV system and rear main seal. He took it on as a project in the slow season, and would like to get rid of it.
