HELP - Signs of Failing Evaporator?? 850 97

My car developed the following symptoms and I am suspecting a failing evaporator:

1. YESTERDAY - When I turned the A/C on, there was mist blowing from the air vents.

2. TODAY - CLOUD of Mist when I turned the A/C on. Freon smell.

3. ON THE WAY HOME - A/C Compressor cut in and out intermittently. Warm air at stationary.

These symptoms are similar to what I experienced on my E36 BMW.

Any idea? If I have to replace the evaporator, what would the job involve? - strip dashboard, estimated costs, etc. HELP...
