1996 Volvo 850 Turbo Sedan with 120,000 miles. This problem has cropped up in the last week, it first happened on the highway when trying to pass someone going from 70-80mph to get around the guy. When the car started to wind out, at about 4,000 RPM’s it just cut out, dropped about 10mph instantly and the RPM’s went down to 2,000. At first this was only happening on the highway, but today (running late for work) I romped on it from a stop and the same scenario happened, same RPM’s just lower speeds. Known issues in the car: my oil cooler line is leaking, I am planning on replacing both the inlet and outlet lines at my next oil change. The turbo has sounded as if it has gotten louder in the last month? It normally is a somewhat quiet turbo, but now it seems to be much louder. Lastly, if I am accelerating, and then let off the gas, I think the waste gate is “fluttering” (FCP Groton has a writeup about this in their turbo parts area), is it supposed to be a smooth blow off of the built up turbocharged air? It is more like sssiiiss siiiss sis sis sis sis till I don’t hear it anymore. (compared to a smooth ppssssshhhhhhhhssssiiiissssshhh that blow off valves make on other cars?) Does anybody have any insight to this problem I am experiencing? I am hoping it is not signs of a major part about to blow up or something. Thanks for your help in advance!
