Roof Spoiler for 2001 XC V70-XC70 2001

Is the optional rear roof spoiler for the 2001 XC likely to have a useful function or is it just cosmetic? Do you think that Volvo would have seriously incorporated the spoiler in wind tunnel test to reduce air turbulance, etc. or is it really being offered just as a styling feature? Experience from previous or current V70 models would probably also be relevant in assessing the spoiler.
